History of ICC
by David Bailey, Pastor of Crossroads Community Church
The Innovative Church Community first met at Integrity Community Church in September 2001 as a gathering of pastors interested in new ways of doing church. The meetings were loosely structured, with Bud Wrenn leading a time of sharing and learning among the pastors. The group was initially called The Purpose Driven Community, reflecting the influence of Saddleback’s ministry among the participants.
As the group grew, the learning times became more focused, often including video presentations from well-known speakers. The gathering became more diverse, and the name was changed to The Innovative Church Community. In 2004 Bud invited several of the participants to attend a leadership retreat to pray about and discuss the future of the group. From that meeting, a more formalized structure began taking shape.
ICC has four points of emphasis. Conferences, Community, Coaching and Consulting provide the framework for all the work of ICC. First, ICC hosts large conferences about twice a year, such as Wired2Grow and One Big Day. The monthly meetings provide the context for building community and fellowship among the participants. ICC also offers one-on-one coaching, helping clients find and take the next steps in their ministries. Finally, ICC offers consulting to churches and church leaders, providing expert advice on ministry issues.
Today, ICC has regional meetings in several locations across the state, in addition to the flagship monthly meeting at Integrity in Burlington. Pastors, staff, and laypersons from many denominations meet regularly to learn from and encourage one another. Leaders of transitioning churches, contemporary fellowships, and new church starts benefit from the community of ICC.
